Berlin is a city with a deep and complex history, much of it challenging and emotional. Before visiting, I had heard people describe it as a gloomy place, and I wondered if that would be my experience too. But when my friend and I arrived to explore this fascinating destination, I found something much more meaningful.
I want to share my story of Berlin through photos, but one image stood out to me in a very personal way:
I discovered this photo in a museum, and it touched me deeply—not because it was about war or Germany specifically, but because of the message it seemed to carry about life itself.
In the photo, there is an old woman standing near the Berlin wall. She’s the only one who cannot see over it. Unlike the other people who climbed a ladder or stood on a motorcycle to catch a glimpse of what lies beyond, she simply doesn’t have the ability. She can only imagine what’s on the other side, maybe by listening to others or asking them to describe it.
For me, this photo symbolizes how life works: when we are young, we have so many opportunities to explore, learn, and achieve. But as we age, or if life places certain obstacles in our path—like illness, injury, or disability—some doors inevitably close, and some walls become impossible to climb.
If we are healthy and able, it’s almost a responsibility to travel, explore, meet people, and embrace the opportunities life offers. One day, we may find ourselves unable to do these things, left only to listen to others’ stories of faraway places.
So, my advice is this: live fully, discover the world, and break out of your small bubble. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
P.S. Despite its reputation, I didn’t find Berlin gloomy or depressing. For me, it was a vibrant city filled with unique treasures. Yes, some parts of it moved me to reflect on life’s values, but that’s what makes Berlin special—it has a flavour all its own. I hope you enjoy the photos—they might speak louder than my words.
